Design Thinking is an empathy-led set of practices to explore problems more robustly, and uncover better solutions that can be prototyped and implemented. Some of the world’s leading brands, such as Apple, Google, Samsung and GE, have rapidly adopted the Design Thinking approach, and the field of Design Thinking is being taught at leading universities around the world, including Stanford, Harvard and MIT.

At the end of this programme, graduates will be able to:

    • Understand Design Thinking as an approach to creative problem-solving
    • Use empathy and modern techniques to understand users, their experiences and their problems
    • Define problems in terms of problem statements that encapsulate business problems
    • Participate in ideation sessions to brainstorm and select appropriate potential solutions
  • Develop  prototypes to consider and reflect on proposed solutions
  • Implement user testing to test proposed solutions and prototypes to determine feasibility of solutions
  • Effectively present proposed solutions, backed by testing and informed user research

  • Anyone and everyone who wants to learn valuable, digital-era skills that allow them to solve complex problems, develop popular products and services,  and grow customer-centric businesses
  • Managers and leaders  looking to instil a culture of innovation and creativity – and develop a “growth mindset” – within their teams.
  • Anyone involved in marketing, sales, product, operations…or quite literally any discipline or function where complex problems need solving and innovation is prized.

The first  week is dedicated to orientation. Students familiarise themselves with the online learning platform (virtual classroom), Portfolio of Evidence, understand how the programme will roll out and meet the humans that’ll be there for support during the programme.

Module 1:  Discover & Define with Design Thinking

This module explores preconceived notions around creativity and design, and introduces learners to Design Thinking by looking at the principles and terminology involved. The focus is on the first two phases of Design Thinking: Empathise and Define. Learners will explore how to understand users, through empathy and detailed research, and how to clearly define the problem at hand by developing the problem statement.

Module 2:  Create & Test with Design Thinking

This module covers the three remaining phases in Design Thinking, namely Ideate, Prototype and Test. It explores ideation phases and tools to develop new ideas, as well as guidance for running ideation workshops, and then proceeds to developing low fidelity prototypes so that learners can see and evaluate their ideas in action. Lastly it covers the importance of testing, refining designs and developing optimal solutions to problems.

The programme is structured as per SETA requirements:

  • 30% Theoretical Formal Learning, including attending online sessions, reading course notes, watching videos, attending online tutorials/workshops and completing theoretical assignments.
  • 70% apportioned to:
    • Practical Tasks: larger research projects and work simulated tasks.

Workplace Activities: these need to be done under the guidance and observation of a workplace manager or mentor. You will need to log all workplace hours have them signed off (Don’t stress about this process, we will guide you through it).

The variety of activities, quizzes and assignments have been carefully designed to enhance the learning experience and  ensure that students are able to practically implement what they have learned.

  • Online assignments and quizzes designed to assess formative knowledge acquisition, active participation and engagement in practical learning activities.
  • Participation in online chat sessions and tutorials
  • An Independent Research Project project for completion at the end of the 3 modules
  • A logbook recording the time spent on the programme and assessment activities
  • Workplace activities that consolidate the learning through practical implementation
  • A portfolio of evidence that compiles all assessment activities for certification.

To qualify, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Matric certificate
  • The ability to implement knowledge and practice skills learned in a business environment
  • If you do not meet the above requirements, we do have an RPL (recognition of prior learning) process in place at an additional admin cost**. Get in touch with us for more information.
