What you learn

Unlike a typical graphic design degree, you'll be exposed to all disciplines of Art Direction, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography and Digital Design, from first year. This gives you a strong background in each and enable you to confidently choose your major and minor subjects in second year.

You will also begin your training in strategic thinking through courses in Visual Studies and Marketing Communications, giving you the theoretical knowledge needed to survive in the ever-changing business world.

Come second year you'll be able to decide on a major e.g. Graphic Design, and a minor subject e.g. Illustration. You will continue to study supporting subjects such as Photography, but these will become your focus.

From the third year you will only work on your major e.g Graphic Design, in order to develop a highly competitive and individualised portfolio that will open the doors to the industry.

More on the five creative disciplines

What is graphic design?

Graphic design communicates through imagery, space and lines. Branding, corporate identity design, packaging, typography, digital media, illustration, publishing and more, are all covered in the graphic design component of the degree. Graphic designers are creative and imaginative individuals, able to think outside of the box and bring ideas to life through beautiful designs.

What is art direction?

Art direction ensures a message is communicated strongly, and consistently across various visual mediums and touch points. Art directors rarely work alone and are known as the 'big ideas people', as they direct the creative concept from start to finish.

What is illustration?

Illustration is closely related to graphic and digital design, but is a specialised field of visual creation. Illustration is not a fine art, but rather conveys stories and messages through various forms of drawing, painting, digital, mixed media and more.

What is photography?

Our photography component will have you mastering everything from Instagram to professional shoots. Taught in both theory and practice, photography complements the four other disciplines by enhancing your knowledge and use of creative mediums in visual communications.

What is digital design?

Digital design covers everything from Adobe Creative Suite skills to app, mobile, web design and more. Available as a major, students will learn the latest practices in user-centred design, animation, film, video and motion graphics production.

How you learn

Theoretical component

This provides the logic (strategic) component of the course, through three years of Marketing Communications and Visual Studies. We'll test your abilities via recognised academic assessments of research, referencing, essay writing and formal examinations, to ensure that you're a strategic and critical thinking force to be reckoned with. This also gives you a solid academic backing that will grant you access to Honours level programmes upon completion of the course.

Practical component

Making up the majority of course work, this is where the magic (creative thinking) happens.
