Most work begins with a solution already in mind. The team scopes the project around it and only finds out much later whether it solved the right problem, when changing direction has become expensive. Design thinking moves the uncertain part of that work to the front, so you understand the people affected and test your assumptions while changing your mind still costs you nothing.
Over ten weeks, you'll work through the full process: researching what people actually need, defining the problem worth solving, generating and narrowing ideas, prototyping, and testing with real users. You'll also tackle the step many teams skip, which is making a credible case for your solution to the people who decide whether it gets funded.
No design background is needed. You'll finish knowing what to do on day one of a problem nobody has defined yet.
Design thinking starts from a simple idea: the best solutions come from understanding the people who will use them. This module introduces the five phases of the process and shows how teams move back and forth between them as they learn. You'll look at what happens when teams skip the early work, learn to tell a problem statement from a solution in disguise, and get a sense of when the method is worth reaching for.
